Local SEO: Hire a Freelancer or an Agency?

How to weigh a freelancer or consultant against an agency for local SEO: who does the work, how broad the scope is, how continuity works, and what to ask about fees.

Published . Updated . Published by Marketer Directory, using the sourced records on this site.

For a business with one or a few locations, the freelancer or agency question matters less than three practical points: who actually does the work, how much work needs doing, and how you will know it is working. This guide walks through each, using statements that providers make on their own pages. Those statements were not independently checked, and they are examples, not a ranking.

Who does the work

A freelancer or consultant usually means one person owns your account. An agency can divide the work across a team. Providers describe this differently, so read the profile rather than the label.

  • Tom Kosicek says clients speak directly with the practitioner who runs the profile audits and local search setup.
  • Orainti says clients work directly with experienced consultants rather than layers of account management.
  • Kick Point describes a small senior team and says clients work with the people doing the work.

If you are told you will have a named contact, ask whether that person also does the hands-on work.

How broad the scope is

Local SEO often touches a Google Business Profile, pages on your own website, reviews, and sometimes paid search. Some agencies list several channels and services together. For example, Blue Corona lists web design, SEO, Google Ads, call tracking, and a call answering service. Many solo consultants list a narrower set.

If you need a website, ads, and call handling from one place, check whether the provider lists all of them. If you already have a sound site, a narrower scope may be enough.

Capacity and continuity

A single practitioner can be a single point of failure. Ask what happens during an absence and how handover would work. A team can cover absences, but ask who your day to day contact would be and whether that person is likely to change.

Fees and terms

Many providers do not publish fees. Where fees were not found in the checked sources, the profile says so, and that is a prompt to ask. Two examples of providers that do publish figures:

  • AptLocal publishes starting monthly fees and a three month minimum term, with the final figure set by written scope.
  • Searchbloom publishes starting monthly fees for SEO and Google Ads management.

A published starting fee is a starting point, not a quote. Compare billing units as well as amounts, and never compare a monthly retainer with a project fee as if they were the same thing.

Questions to ask either type

  1. Who will do the work on my account, and who will I speak with?
  2. What exactly is included in the fee, and what is priced separately?
  3. Will my Google Business Profile and website stay in accounts that I own?
  4. How are results reported: calls and form fills, or rankings only?
  5. What is the minimum term, and how does it end?
  6. What does the first month cover before you expect to see results?

When each tends to fit

A solo consultant may suit an owner who wants direct access and a defined scope, such as an audit or advisory arrangement. An agency may suit a business that wants several channels managed together. Neither is better in general. The facts on each profile, and the answers to the questions above, decide it.

Provider types in this directory

Types follow how each provider describes itself. Counts are profiles, and each profile appears once.
